Bridging the Past: Connecting Students with Women’s Roles in American History

As an AP US History teacher, I’ve always been passionate about helping my students understand the intricate tapestry of our past. One challenge I’ve consistently faced is finding resources that effectively highlight the diverse roles of women throughout American history. This is why I created a unique comparison activity focusing on four iconic images of femininity: the Gibson Girl, the Flapper, the Cult of Domesticity, and Republican Motherhood.

A Personal Journey in Teaching Women’s History

In my experience, students often struggle to connect the dots between different historical periods and the roles women played in them. This activity has been a game-changer in my classroom. By comparing the Republican Mother and the Gibson Girl, for instance, my students can see how these roles were very much a reflection of their respective times. This comparison has helped them organize their thoughts and understand the evolution of women’s roles in society.

Why This Resource Matters

I created this resource because I found it difficult to find ready-to-use information specifically about women and their different roles. This comparison activity fills that gap by providing detailed readings, critical thinking questions, and self-reflection prompts. It offers a nuanced understanding of women’s experiences and contributions, making it an invaluable tool for any history classroom.
